Description: The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University seeks applications for a 12-month, full time, tenure-track faculty position in food safety. The position is described as 60% research and 40% extension.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research program and extension program. The research may address basic and/or applied issues relative to food safety topics at any point from pre- to post-harvest food production. The successful candidate will participate in and/or lead research teams and coordinate integrated multidisciplinary projects among campus-wide collaborators. The research program is expected to complement and support extension programming to group audiences. Extension responsibilities will include development of training programs and workshops with supporting educational materials for FDA, USDA or state regulated food producers, processors and extension field staff. The research program will be supported with extramural support from federal/state agencies and/or industry groups.
Multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities in food safety exist with ISU faculty in the departments of Agronomy, Animal Science, Horticulture, Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management, Plant Pathology, and Veterinary Medicine. ISU also participates in multi-institutional programs within the Food Safety Consortium (http://www.foodsafety.iastate.edu) and the Center for Food Security and Public Health (http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu). Additional collaborative opportunities are available through programs such as the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), which provides expertise to industries in Iowa, and the Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products (BIGMAP), which provides guidance and research on genetically modified agricultural products.
Preference will be for candidates with knowledge and current experience in microbiological, chemical and/or toxicological aspects of food safety. Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, including evolving electronic technologies, and ability to work in collaborative environments are necessary for effective interchanges with agencies and media on food safety issues. Position includes a competitive salary, benefits package, and start-up package to establish a successful research program.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Food Science/Food Safety or closely related area.

Preferred Qualifications: Post-doctoral research or equivalent industry experience in food safety; experience in extension or related activities; experience with microbiology and/or toxicology related to food safety.
