The European Commission launches a rising awareness project on food
safety in Kyrgyzstan.
“It is important to make more people think about food quality and
shorten a gap between Kyrgyzstan’s and international food safety
standards,” Steven John Avalan Newton, head of
the Assistance to EU-KR Partnership and Cooperation Agreement
Implementation project told reporters in Bishkek on November 5, 2008.
The project includes interviewing of some 500 households in Kyrgyzstan
on the topic of food safety during and after the project, in order to trace
the project’s dynamics. “I expect to see an amount of letters and claims to
the Kyrgyz government with certain food safety requirements,” the project’s
head said.
According to the Kyrgyz deputy minister of economic development and
trade Aidar Mokenov the
project stems elaboration of a technical regulation of food safety, which
will have a legal status. The regulation will reportedly contain
peculiarities of food items production and allow Kyrgyz producers to sell
items abroad.
