Food Scientist -Bakery and Snack Applications

Primary Function

The Food Scientist in our product development function will be a key contributor to our Bakery and Snack projects. This will include managing a portfolio of projects which involves planning and executing research, leading experimental design, execution and commercialization for new product development, and customer and product support. This will also include advancing the capabilities of the bakery and snack area.

Bakery and Snacks Team Leader

Supervision:

None immediately – future potential to supervise technologists

Key Deliverables

Business

·         Use food science/bakery science expertise to develop, lead and manage bakery and snack projects including commercializing ingredients. Includes interdisciplinary projects of global scope.

·         Identify and propose potential new products and technologies for bakery and snack segemnt.

·         Provide support for customer projects.

·         Run tests at external facilities, or support customers.

Agility and Innovation

·         Design and conduct experiments in the laboratory or pilot plant to progress projects.

·         Support the development of new bakery and snacks capability in the organization including providing required education/training.

·         Stay abreast of bakery and snacks technology environment (market trends, IP landscape) to differentiate products and technologies.

Relationships

and People

·         Serve as a technical lead on multifunctional product development teams.

·         Collaborate with cereal science, process technology, system design & measurement, sensory and marketing functions to develop and commercialize productts.

·         Communicate results and keep appropriate records to support internal clients and external customers.

Knowledge, Skills,

and Requirements:

·         PhD in food science/engineering or a related field with 1 or more years of relevant work experience desired, MS with 4+ years or BS with 8+ years relevant experience required.

·         Applications and/or product development experience in the bakery and/or snacks industry (e.g. bread and rolls, cakes, biscuits, extruded and sheeted crackers and snacks, pasta, breakfast cereals and bars inclduing related RTE, dry-mix or frozen dough products) is required.

·         Demonstrated experience in hands-on product development with laboratory and/or pilot plant equipment/processes related to bakery and/or snacks products and/or relevant ingredient development required.

·         Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and interact with a cross-functional team. Supervisory skills and experience desired.

·         Experience with experiment design, statistical data analysis, and interpretation of results desired.

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office (word, excel, power-point, project).

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to communicate technical information both verbally and written (making presentations and technical reports).

·         Demonstrated track record of significant technical achievement including patents, publications, presentations, and product development/ launch experience.

·         Demonstrated project management skills and experience.

·         Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills and experience.

·         Some travel required- 10%.
