India: 40 students ill, hospitalised for food poisoning

Rourkela (PTI): At least 40 students of Khutugaon Girls Upper Primary School in Orissa's Sundergarh district were taken ill, three of them seriously after consuming food in their hostel, official sources said on Friday.

The students complained of vomiting and abdomen pain after taking food in their school hostel on Wednesday and Thursday. As many as 40 were admitted to Bonai sub-divisonal hospital with three of them in serious condition, sources said.

Hospital in-charge B N Das told PTI that three of them were still under treatment. The cause of the illness was due to suspected food poisoning, he said.

The school run by Khandadhar Paudibhuyana Development authority has a strength of 250 girls from nearby villages.

The students, mostly poor tribal girls have been given free education and food by the authority for spreading education among the tribal girls.
