A student of Government Girls College, Bauchi, in Bauchi State (name withheld), has been confirmed dead from suspected food poisoning, while 40 others are currently on admission at the Specialists Hospital, Bauchi.

The state governor, Isa Yuguda, has directed the Ministry of Health to immediately carry out all necessary laboratory tests to determine what was responsible for the development.

Yuguda, who visited the students in the hospital at the weekend as well as the school premises, said the era of allowing students to be in public schools without meeting all their basic needs was over.

According to him, his administration would take serious measures to address the matter and forestall its recurrence. He directed both the Ministry of Health and that of Education to ensure that everything was done to investigate the matter thoroughly and feed the government back as soon as possible. The governor later personally tasted the food in question to disabuse the minds of those who had concluded that it was indeed food poisoning.

Parents have been visiting the school and hospital to ascertain the state of their children’s health. Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune showed that some students took ill immediately after taking a meal of beans, which made some to believe that the beans served the students might have been poisoned.
