Bauchi
Following the death of one student and hospitalisation of about forty other students of Government Girls College,
Bauchi, from what is suspected to be food
poisoning, Governor Isa Yuguda has directed the
state Ministry of Health to carry out laboratory tests to determine what was
responsible for the situation.
A statement signed by Maigari Mohammed Khanna, Director, Press Affairs and Public
Relations to the Bauchi State Governor said
the Governor, who personally visited the students in their sick beds and the
school affected said the era of allowing students to be in public schools
without meeting all their needs is over.
He said as a responsible government his administration will not watch
students “going through this kind of unfortunate situation” without taking
serious measures to address the matter and forestall its recurrence.
Mallam Yuguda directed
the state Ministry of Health to carry out laboratory tests and the ministry
of education to investigate the matter “thoroughly and feed the government
back as soon as possible”.
The Governor later personally tested the food in question to disabuse the
minds of those who pre-conclude that it was indeed food poisoning.
Feeding secondary school students in public schools in the state has been a
very serious problem which made parents to fend for their children in school
until the administration of Malam Yuguda came on board and made sufficient funds available
to the Cooperative Financing Agency for the purpose of ensuring that
students of public schools always get sufficient and balanced food.
