Position: Pilot Plant Systems Analyst (12-month, full time academic professional)


Job Description: The primary responsibility of the Systems Analyst is to support faculty and research programs utilizing facilities/equipment related to the processing of food and biomass materials in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and in the Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research (CABER). Duties include:


  • Monitoring, analyzing and recommending equipment adjustments based on an understanding of faculty research objectives. The Systems Analyst will work autonomously with varying levels of delegated authority from faculty. System monitoring, data analysis and calibration of equipment may vary between research projects and the Systems Analyst will be responsible for establishing protocols with faculty for determining appropriate levels of independent versus collaborative decision making.
  • Managing pilot plant facilities. This includes ensuring that highly specialized research and technical apparatus is functioning properly, and ensuring that optimal research standards for individual projects are achieved. Operation, maintenance and calibration of technical equipment require advanced knowledge in food processing systems, and research methodology. More specifically, the calibration of technical equipment requires frequent monitoring and analysis of research data.
  • Coordinating with faculty to organize teaching and research projects and to ensure the availability of research equipment and personnel.
  • Developing and implementing technical training in the areas of equipment operation, pilot plant safety and proper sanitation techniques relative to the pilot plant and research objectives. Training also includes fundamentals of research methodology and data analysis.
  • Supervising the day-to-day operations of students, personnel and others within the designated work areas.
  • Overseeing maintenance of research equipment, working with University personnel and outside contractors as necessary
  • Researching, developing and maintaining written operating procedures to maintain compliance with current regulations (good manufacturing practices, GMP) and accepted food industry practices.
  • Serving as a representative between the department and industry partners, funding agencies, and other universities, and liaison with Facilities and Services in pilot plant matters.


Minimum Qualifications: Candidates for the position should have:

  • Bachelorís degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Food Science, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field (Masterís degree preferred)
  • 1-3 years of work experience in supervising and training others in an educational environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of pilot scale food processing equipment
  • Knowledge of/experience with research principals and research methodology
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting research data
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills


Preferred Qualification:

  • Understanding of mechanical systems and the capability to trouble shoot
  • Knowledge of state and federal food processing regulations and current manufacturing practices and HAACP
  • Illinois Food Handlers Sanitation License
  • Demonstrated organizational, and project management skills including prioritization and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to support and engage in research projects while learning new and evolving techniques in the processing industry
  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills including the ability to effectively interact with industry representatives


Location: Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and CABER are located in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The Department offers an undergraduate degree with five options (Food Science, Food Industry and Business, Dietetics, Human Nutrition, and Hospitality Management) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department has 26 full-time tenure-track faculty members, an undergraduate enrollment of 415, and an on-campus graduate enrollment of 88 students. CABER interacts with multiple disciplinary and professional units on campus, and faculty and students to provide a facilitative structure for campus teaching, research, and outreach in areas related to bioenergy systems, supporting the emergence of advanced bio-fuels and chemicals.
