Primary Position Function: Bridge basic and advanced system, network and desktop support with applications to pedagogical activities and research on campus and will have both operational and specialized research responsibilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Serve the faculty and staff of the Departments of Food Science & Human Nutrition within the College of ACES. Support spectrum of IT functions. Research responsibilities include: the analysis, development, and application of selected IT services to research activities involving the storage, transmission, processing and analysis of data; analysis, recommendation and application of technology to increase the effectiveness of faculty research, learning and teaching. Utilize specialized knowledge involving the intersection of research and technology, assist in, researching, purchasing, planning and installing future systems, infrastructure and products as well as specialized software needed for research including analyzing needs relative to options and provide recommendations for technological support that are consistent with: research methodology; principals of research data analysis; and, is the most effective/efficient use of resources. Consult with users on installation and use of software applications which also interface to or utilize network connections. Analyze existing system structures in order to optimize operational and cost effectiveness. For new research projects, conduct analysis of relevant technologies and advise faculty how to most effectively leverage technology to align with their specific research objectives. Advise on use of varied computing and communications technology especially on specialized software such as (Polyflow, SAS, SPSS, Nvivo, ArcGIS, POS systems). Maintain scientific systems and assist staff in running these systems. Research tools and applications that assist users with their specific research needs including consulting with faculty/staff to determine what research needs may require product or systems upgrades and/or identify alternative technologies to complete research initiatives. Train staff and faculty on use of research related equipment. Solve varied and complex IT problems with limited supervision. Draft documentation as required for internal CCSG use as well as external applications ranging from educational material for faculty and staff to specific software applications. Train and manage student employees that are assigned to the unit.




Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. A bachelor's degree in a non-related field will be considered if accompanied by demonstrated in-depth experience in network and systems support.
  • Minimum of 1 year professional experience with installation and maintenance of Microsoft Windows operating systems in a business or university environment.
  • Experience in interfacing or utilizing network connections.
  • Software communications experience in at least one of: Polyflow, SAS, SPSS, Nvivo, ArcGiS, POS.
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and be on call when needed.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with current personal computing platforms, workstations, networking technologies, software, and hardware.
  • Previous experience with training/supervising others and be able to direct student employees or colleagues assisting in the unit.
  • Ability to research, install, and maintain specialized software for various research groups in the college of ACES (e.g. Polyflow, Point of Sales system, SAS, SPSS, etc.).
  • Evidence of independent work on solving complex IT problems.
  • Functional understanding of research based principals and structures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of imaging software (Ghost and WDS), GPO application, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 server products.
  • Strong service attitude, ability to effectively handle multiple priorities, good communication skills, and self-direction in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and decision making skills.


Salary: Salary will be entry level commensurate with training and experience.
