16 dead of suspected food poisoning in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast - Health officials say 16 people have died and at least another 96 have been sickened with food poisoning in a small village 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Ivory Coast's capital.

Ministry of Health Spokesman Simeon Nda says townspeople in the village of Bongouanou appear to have consumed a locally popular broth.

The majority of the dead were children under age 11. Ninety-six other people are being cared for in the village hospital. The symptoms include fever and severe cramping.

State-run TV reported that President Laurent Gbagbo arrived in the village on Monday. - AP
