Conducts inspection, evaluation, investigation & surveillance activities of Wholesale Food industry for compliance with mandated, state &/or federal laws & rules to ensure safe production & sale of food products: collects samples (e.g., raw produce & processed foods) from wholesale & retail facilities in & out of state &/or imported from other countries; conducts inspections at wholesale food facilities (e.g., manufacturers, bakeries, canning operations); evaluates procedures to ensure safe & wholesome food production &/or handling; enforces adequacy of mandated Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP); conducts investigation & surveillance activities at wholesale food establishments with respect to food safety violations; monitors facilities to determine if operations (e.g., food production, food handling/storage, transporting) meet requirements as prescribed by rule & law & provides consultation to assist in implementation of facility compliance.

Provides expert advice, consultation & direction to food industry on food safety issues (e.g., proper sanitary practices, compliance with good manufacturing practices, agricultural food laws & regulations): provides direction & technical assistance to industry personnel; enforces rules & regulations for specific food processing &/or handling procedures; provides support service for industry training; attends industry training & provides additional direction for individual firms; assists industry personnel in applying training to specific firm needs.

Conducts inspections &/or investigations of consumer related inquiries: responds to assignment from supervisor of inquiries &/or complaints; works with firms to investigate & resolve issues; initiates enforcement activities with food industry management as needed; maintains evaluation instruments & field equipment (e.g., laptops, portable printers, broadband cards, flashlight, thermometer, digital camera, portable refrigerator/freezer unit) to ensure they remain in good working order; participates in drills & exercises of emergency plans; prepares & delivers speeches & presentations to groups & organizations; operates personal computer to enter, edit & verify data & produce reports

Performs other related duties as assigned: devises personal itinerary periodically & reports information to supervisor on routine basis; provides open & frequent communication to supervisor on changes to itinerary or issues requiring immediate attention from central office; travels to firms using state issued vehicle; attends staff meetings as scheduled at central office location; attends required training to remain current as Food Safety Specialist; writes reports & keeps accurate & efficient filing of documents until submitted to central office clerical staff.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Certificate of registration as sanitarian, sanitarian-in-training or eligible to become sanitarian-in-training by Ohio State Board of Sanitarian Registration pursuant to Chapter 4736 of Ohio Revised Code; completion of full four year course of study in accredited college or university leading to bachelorís or higher degree which included at least 45 quarter units or 30 semester hours in food science, environmental health, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, veterinary medical science or related field of study; 6 mos. exp. in operation of personal computer; valid driverís license.

 Major Worker Characteristics:

Knowledge of food science; agency, state & federal laws, rules, regulations & guidelines governing food safety procedures & techniques; microbiology; physics; environmental science; inspection techniques. Skill in operation of personal computer; inspection tools to include thermometer, test kit, PH meter & light meter. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; handle sensitive contacts with officials, general public & industry personnel; investigate complaints; provide expert advice & technical assistance with federal or local government employees, health department personnel & food industry personnel; demonstrate physical fitness.
