Job Overview:

The Corporate Food Safety Manager is responsible to provide proactive leadership and instruction in the area of Food Safety. This position mitigates food safety risk through Food Safety programs that provide safe food to customers and ensures compliance of all applicable food regulations. The Manager oversees the system for food safety policy management and compliance and assists with management of the product recall process. This role partners with merchandising teams, supply chain/distribution operations, and independent sales group to provide food safety consultation support; and collaborates to provide leadership and training to Safety/Food Safety Field team.

Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Partner with local retail store Leadership in deploying and executing all food safety related strategies, policies and tactics; and maintain open communication with Store and retail store personnel to address the identification of food safety hazards and process improvement opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Corporate Food Safety Director, provide leadership and development to a team of Safety/Food Safety Administrators who are directly responsible for executing approved food safety strategies and tactics.
  • Assist with the management of the recall team and product recall process to ensure timely communication and execution of product recalls, including fulfillment of the TSA recall requirement.
  • Monitor and assist stores to comply with local, state and federal food regulations, including the FDA Food Code, USDA and FDA labeling laws, COOL, and the Food Safety Modernization Act rules.
  • Provide crisis management expertise as needed for food safety related events such as media stories, foodborne illness outbreaks, product recalls, or natural disasters.
  • Manage food safety and pest control vendor programs. Ensure vendors are maintaining agreed upon service levels.
  • Manage food safety regulatory programs for distribution center operations, including Seafood HACCP and FSMA rules.
  • Partner with Human Resources in addressing food safety performance management issues involving store personnel; and represent and/or provide guidance regarding the company's interests at all regulatory agency hearings and formal proceedings.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science, microbiology, environmental health, or public health.
  • 5+ years previous experience in Food Safety management or compliance.
  • Possess strong familiarity with retail grocery operations and distribution operations.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of FDA, USDA COOL, FSMA and food regulations, plus continuous education and certification in food safety is required.
  • Possess excellent communications skill, both written and verbal plus the ability to make effective presentations to various group sizes.
  • Ability to occasionally travel (up to 25%) to various store locations throughout assigned retail store locations. Incumbent must be able to drive a vehicle and move freely about the stores including second-story offices, back rooms and production areas.
