Summary:
|
|
Residing at The Hershey
Company's Technical Center, this position involves a unique opportunity
to work in the Food Science and Technology group. This group is
responsible for evaluating new technologies and ingredients, improving
current processes and products, and providing new product opportunities
through research discoveries. The Research Scientist/Engineer will work
independently and as a part of various teams to achieve their goals on
project assignments. The individual should be able to interact with many
different types of individuals including technical support, various
scientists, product developers, marketing, legal and management.
Under moderate supervision,
assume responsibility for the realization of projects of significant
importance, complexity or scope, or assist on certain phases of projects
that are of major importance, complexity or scope. Undertake
projects as assigned, and make suggestions for initiation of projects, or
their abandonment, as experience allows. Assume responsibility for
participating in project design and methodology, problem solving through
application of knowledge and original thinking. Test ideas through
preparation of experimental formulations, applications, or manufacturing
trials. Under general direction, take initiative to secure from all
available sources all pertinent advice, ideas, and information having a
bearing upon a project. Operate or direct the operation of
laboratory equipment or apparatus in the performance of tests or
experiments. Review results of tests with others and suggest the
advisability of further tests and/or changes deemed necessary.
Prepare all project reports as required. Make presentation of
significant conclusions when pertinent. Work with R&D staff and
management as well as Production, Marketing, and Legal departments within
the Company on a frequent basis involving problems associated with
assigned projects. Discuss technical problems with vendors.
Member of a professional organization(s). Provide leadership and
instruction to technicians when assigned to assist on a project.

Qualifications:
|
|
This position can be filled at
various levels depending on experience: Associate Research
Scientist, Research Scientist or a Sr
Research Scientist. A competitive compensation package will be
based on formal education and related experience.
Minimum knowledge, skills and
abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:
- Sound
knowledge of at least one branch of the sciences and with the
application of that discipline to problems presented by project
work. Exercised limited judgment in project execution.
- Demonstrated
ability of a sound working technical knowledge
- Be
comfortable with operating plant and/or lab equipment
- Excellent
written and verbal communication skills
- Attention
to detail
- Good
mathematical skills
- Possess
good computer skills (basic knowledge of Word, Access, Excel,
Exchange)
- Ability to
work in a team environment and independently in a flexible work
environment with changing priorities
Minimum Education and Experience
Requirements:
Associate Research Scientist
Bachelor's Degree in a related
field required.
Research Scientist
Bachelor's Degree in a related
field plus two years of applicable professional working experience, or
Master's Degree in a relevant discipline.
Senior Research Scientist
Bachelor's Degree in a related
field plus four to five years of applicable professional
working experience, or Master's Degree plus two to three years of
applicable professional experience, or a PhD.
