Job Title: Food Safety Specialist
Department: Food Safety
Job Location: Northern Virginia/Maryland Area
Job Duties:
• Must be knowledgeable about food safety, sanitation audits, pest control, food safety training, weights & measures, Country of Origin requirements and applicable regulatory food codes.
• Help ensure customer satisfaction through the education and validation of applicable food safety and quality standards and procedures as they concern our stores, distribution centers (DC) and associates. The Specialist will instruct through training, coaching, auditing and mentoring.
• Inspection of stores and DC facilities to ensure we meet or exceed established internal procedures and regulatory requirements. Ability to coach, train and follow-up as necessary.
• Instruct food safety training and certification program.
• Advocate and resident expert for company food safety standard practices, policies and programs.
• Interact and communicate directly with company associates and leadership.
• Ability and confidence to interact with regulatory officials as a company liaison.
• Actively participate in regulatory meetings.
• Monitor and follow-up with sanitation and pest control vendors and services rendered.
• Provide support, direction and follow-up for emergency or crisis management events (power outages, fires, floods, illnesses, recall audits, etc.).
• Support business in thoroughly investigating potential customer questions, complaints or product claims.
• Ability to perform microbiological sampling and effectively interpret the results.


Experience Required:
• Must be able to work independently.
• A self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Must be results and detail oriented, have ability to develop self and others.
• Focused on ‘root cause’ analysis.
• Excellent communication skills for both one-on-one and group interactions.
• Effective in delivering food safety training programs to adult learners.

• Must have ability to act as a team leader or team builder.
• Must embrace diversity and support company initiatives and goals.
• Available for overnight travel, as necessary.
• Operate a car.
• Must have basic computer skills and knowledge to operate MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and e-mail.
