VP, Botanical Science-121198 – Torrance, CA



The VP, Botanical Science will direct all department activities related to botanicals, including literature searches on the safety, benefit and regulatory status of botanical ingredients and formulations of botanical-containing Herbalife products, and will support Herbalife product development and external outreach efforts in the field. The position accountabilities include directing the identification, documentation and validation of the appropriate botanical ingredients, formulations and processes that meet standards and requirements for product costs, quality, efficacy, safety and regulatory acceptability. This individual will also direct the development responses to MOH or other regulatory inquiries regarding Herbalife botanical products and assist in the leadership of the GPSS department.


·         Responsible for HLF’s botanical science and policy worldwide.

·         Responsible for managing and coordinating HLF science and policy efforts related to botanical ingredients globally

·         Lead scientific qualification and collaborate on the selection of HLF botanical raw materials

·         Advise/support Corporate and Regional R&D, Quality Assurance, Licensing, Operations, Sourcing and Marketing on technical, scientific, safety and innovation related to botanicals

·         Direct written reports on the safety and efficacy of HLF’s botanical-containing products (inner & outer nutrition)

·         Lead development of science-based recommendations to help inform internal decision making related to botanical products and raw materials, including specifications

·         Drive innovation for new botanical-containing Herbalife products

·         Lead effort to develop responses to MOH inquiries regarding botanicals in HLF products

·         Proactively drive and collaborate with Worldwide Regulatory, Government and Industry Affairs, corporate and trade association partners on global science and policy initiatives related to botanicals

·         Engage with regulators and policy makers on a global basis to shape the scientific, regulatory and policy frameworks for botanical ingredients in foods/supplements

·         Engage and liaise with influential academic and research institutions specializing in botanical research and regulation

·         Serve as the HLF representative to key global trade groups focusing on botanical technical, scientific and policy challenges




·         Ability to function under general supervision as a contributing technical resource

·         Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

·         Strong use of MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

·         Ability to predict and solve problems in a practical, timely and collaborative manner

·         10+ years experience in natural products safety and efficacy evaluation

·         Proven history of achieving results and adding corporate value

·         Successful track record of contributions in cross-functional technical teams

·         Successful management of small to medium-sized teams

·         Recognized expertise in the field of botanicals and natural products

·         Pharmacology or pharmacognosy background

·         Substantive list of publications in the peer-reviewed literature (or internal publications)

·         Analytical chemistry expertise

·         Strong command of the US regulatory requirements for botanical ingredient safety assessment and registration

·         Demonstrated understanding of physiologic effects of botanicals and experience applying these to product innovation and claims


·         Food and/or dietary supplement R&D, scientific affairs and/or regulatory affairs experience, related to botanicals

·         Strong understanding of food and dietary/food supplement policy and regulation outside the US

·         Fluency (reading and writing) in other foreign language(s)



·         PhD in Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology or related field

Supervisory Responsibilities

: Some supervisory responsibility of junior and regional GPSS staff.

Work Environment:

• The office is clean, orderly, properly lighted and ventilated• Noise levels are considered low to moderate• Pilot plant and manufacturing environments will require use of proper safety equipment, which will be provided.
