POSITION PURPOSE:

R&D Scientist supports all activities in Research and Development of new products and improvements to current products. This would include soliciting of raw material samples, prototype development, shelf life studies, and new material documentation under the guidance of the Product Development Manager

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITY:

∑ Makin prototypes of marketing evaluation

∑ Maintain the lab including materials from production or approved suppliers, clean dishes and general housekeeping

∑ Manage competitorís products released in the US market including analysis and pulling samples for evaluation of marketing management and product development

∑ Pull, evaluate and provide samples to marketing and management for shelf life

∑ Meet with marketing along with product development technologies to determine project direction

∑ Solicit new materials to test as well as evaluate fundamental interactions with raw materials, processing, packaging and distribution conditions

∑ Schedule and monitor production scale tests/start ups

  • BA/BS Food Sciences of equivalent, knowledge of sanitation and GMP practices, good organization skills and attention to detail, must be able to multi-task and work in a deadline driven environment, sharp analytical skills and creative problem solver, dedication to meet project deadlines and willing to work extended hours when necessary, able to work in a fast paced environment, team player yet able to work independently, resourceful and takes initiative, solid understanding of excel as an analytical tool and Word and PowerPoint for reporting as needed, interest in the consumer food products industry, ability to travel occasionally domestically and internationally (10%), ability to lift 50lbs.

∑ BA/BS Food Science or equivalent (entry level to 5 yearís experience, ideally with some background in a food manufacturing facility)

∑ University degree/ Bachelorís degree

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Clear and concise communication is required between internal customers, vendors, international and domestic colleagues and suppliers.
  • Managing multiple projects: Keeping all the projects organized can be challenging. Finding time to make sure that the developments are well organized for easy retrieval and keeping the group informed of the progress. This requires a system to be created to make the experiments and formulations easy to find on the computer.
  • Changing Priorities: Marking will often need a change to particular products under development. Often these changes are requested with little time to source the materials or to conduct the stability test. In these cases, the best decision must be made base4d on previous experience. One example would be marketing wanted a new flavor for a promotion, but did not allow for enough time to get the new flavor in, made into bars, and conduct shelf life tests. We need to suggest using a limited time flavor previously used with color modification to meet desired concept timing.
  • Assist in the coordination of research projects and determine development steps for new products based on project objectives. This will require following research procedures and experiment guidelines to ensure effective development. The position will assist in the research and development of formations. Laboratory machinery requirements, ingredients, and manufacturing processes for new and existing products. As products are developed, keeping the area organized and control necessary ingredient inventory for research projects including working with suppliers in important. As new products emerge, the position will work closely with Supply Chain and vendors for war material sourcing. Finished prototypes and sales samples will be produced for meeting and for the sales team as needed. Finally, complete reports and management updates on progress, including maintaining all laboratory experimentation and notebooks.
