General Summary


This role will leverage expertise in product development with a proven track record in the product design and commercialization of successful products according to quality, processing and nutrition guidelines and adhering to timelines and budget requirements. The role will have exposure to numerous technical platforms including thermal, RTC and RTE processes across a number of manufacturing facilities for the Away From Home business. This person will have accountability for formula design principles, processing procedures and systems and the management of protocol documentation that supports product development by managing and transferring technical information from the kitchen to the manufacturing plants. The person must be highly proficient in R&D formula and documentation systems and related Business Processes. Assignments are of moderate complexity and technical risk that could be a part of a larger effort across multidisciplinary teams. Work is performed with minimal supervision.


Principle Accountabilities (list in order of priority with approximate time allocation)


Product and Process Development -50%

  • Improve product and processes for Away From Home formulations by identifying ingredient usage and functionality to drive efficiencies by preparing kitchen batches and conducting product inspections with Marketing/R&D and other functions as needed.
  • Identify solutions to new or existing ingredient handling, plant processing variations and problems as they relate to new products, quality improvements and enablers.
  • Design experiments to conduct and coordinate major plant feasibility studies across multiple brands and variables. Develop contingency plans for projects through brainstorming and liaising with various groups (Operations, PR&D, Quality, etc.) in order to maintain product quality.
  • Act as an R&D rep to cross-functional business teams inputting into strategic plans to recommend new or improved product processes, and/or cost-saving ideas & to determine project rationale, timelines and challenges.
  • Train new hires & provide guidance to Product Developers on all aspects of systems, processes, protocols & procedure

Project and Process Development Coordination and Management - 30%

  • Communicate and coordinate with various functions (Marketing, Supply Chain, Packaging) to ensure timely product launch through ongoing updates, timeline management & negotiation.
  • Proficient on all relevant software systems/applications such as Optiva, and SAP and business flow processes.
  • Ability to leverage system knowledge to organize and streamline different types of technical documentation for enhanced department efficiency.
  • Identify and coach Product Developers in best practices in the development of formulas, procedures & specifications.
  • Communicate closely with Packaging, Product Development, Quality, Regulatory Affairs and Marketing to maintain up-to-date project information and priorities.


Project Documentation - 20%

  • Deliver timely, accurate and complete project documentation including:
  • Kitchen batch documentation
  • Special batch, Pilot Plant and final formulas and procedures
  • Inspection summaries & reports
  • Creation of vendor specifications for new ingredients
  • Departmental & project related reports/summaries/ status updates

Job Complexity

  • Possess a strong knowledge of formula formats and terminology.
  • Must have foundational knowledge of Manufacturing Systems and associated Processes.
  • Must work with the PD Technologists to understand and evaluate the impact of formula changes on associated documentation.
  • Requires the development of data queries and results interpretation in both Optiva and SAP.
  • Must be able to reach out to various functional groups within the organization when developing/modifying formulas, procedures & specifications.
  • Must engage the PD Technologists and Managers in the formula management system preparation and approvals.
  • Must be able to deal with ambiguity, adapt quickly to change and persevere. In addition, the job requires the ability to identify critical path items and risks, and effectively communicate these to the business team and management

Job Specifications

  • Minimum Education Required: BS in Food Science/Biology/Life Sciences. Qualified candidate could have Quality documentation management experience or QA data analysis experience.
  • Years of Relevant Experience: 3-5 years
