About the Opportunity

We are currently looking for a Product Developer. The Product Developer would be the primary contact for all Product Development projects within the Boston Brewery. This includes beer, tea and cider, and the focus would be product development out of the Boston Brewery and coordination of tasks that involve moving the new product from testing to market. The person would manage and build timelines, execute capacity planning and scheduling of the 10 bbl system in Boston, work on cross-functional teams to direct product outcomes, and manage on-time delivery of new products to market. Collaborative teamwork across business units including R&D in Boston, Production facilities, 3rd party contractors, Brand, Marketing, Procurement, Finance, etc. Guides Product Development team in Boston to create innovative new products. Must have exceptional and proven organizational, communication and team building skills. This person would be located at the Boston Brewery and would report to the Sensory, Research and Development Manager.

Ingredients To Be A Successful Product Developer:

  • With direction from senior colleagues, plans and implements specific phases of product development projects, focusing on line extensions
  • Develops specific action plans to accomplish project goals. Includes experimental design and execution of bench top, pilot plant, and plant trials where appropriate, and shelf-life testing
  • Executes action plans in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manages brewhouse capacity and scheduling for the 10 bbl system and works closely with nano brewery to create optimum efficiency in executing trials.
  • Responsible for developing technical skills specific to areas of functional responsibility:
    • Applies sound scientific techniques in analysis of project goals and action plans (i.e., experimental design, statistics, etc.).
    • Gains understanding of food product development, consumer test design/implementation/analysis, and fundamental underlying science/technology where appropriate.
    • Broadens knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes, packages, and basic science as they apply to product development or basic scientific principles, as appropriate.
    • Leads Technical project team to design/develop products or basic science at bench, pilot plant prototype as appropriate.
    • Demonstrates awareness and practice of safety procedures, GMPs, food regulations, and the implications for product/science development.
  • Developing functional/business skills:
    • Develops understanding of R&D/QA.
    • Gains a strong understanding of the consumer fundamentals process.
    • Broadens knowledge of related business organizations (linkages with Marketing, Finance, and other various departments).
  • Reacts to change productively and handles other related duties as needed.
  • Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes and effectively accomplish assigned duties through work of subordinates
  • Research, analyze, develop and manage programs, including business plans and budget formulation, execution and accountability.
  • Develops R&D-related documents, protocols, and other R&D assessment tools
  • Set original standards for production, for in-house and outsourced the work
  • Provide support on new product start-up by collecting data and monitoring specific areas of the process to assure products meet design requirements
  • Utilize computer to record, sort and track data
  • Develop and approve new and reformulated products based upon product quality, performance, and cost. Includes performing product sensory evaluation, researching product standards and attributes, determining product safety, and directing consumer testing and analysis by third parties if needed.
  • Providing technical direction and mentoring to and/or supervising other scientific professionals on staff
  • Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation

To Be Mixed With:

  • BS required in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other scientific-related discipline
  • Masters in Business a plus
  • 8-10 years of related industry experience
  • Willingness to travel 20-30%
  • Must possess the technical skills to work in a lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing scale environments
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and influence effectively
  • Must have project management skills and be able to work under tight timelines
  • Must be highly organized and able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem solve
  • Must enjoy working in a cross-functional environment
  • Must have a strong desire for results and ability to bring projects to completion
  • Prior experience with flavors is a plus
