Food Safety Specialist

Food Safety Auditing Program

The Cooperative Agricultural Support Services (CASS) is a Joint Powers Authority that provides efficient and cost effective support for activities carried out by the California Department of Food and Agriculture and county agricultural commissioners.

Under the direction of federal, state or county staff, CASS employees grade agricultural products for growers, shippers, packers and processors throughout California. CASS also provides temporary staff to meet the needs of both state and county programs engaged in pest detection, trapping and eradication.

The inumbent in this position provides program support by working with CDFA staff in modifying existing programs and in the development of new program services. The incumbent will work with minimal oversight to develop and improve program activities to meet the needs of industry members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under direction, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, the incumbent in this position works with Shipping Point staff to oversee the development and implementation of new programs within the Shipping Point Inspection/Food Safety programs. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Develop Program Services and Improve Existing Program Activities - 80%

        Review and develop existing programs to ensure successful implementation of new program activities.

        Determine, through contact with customers, needs that the program can address and how best the program can be structured to meet those needs.

        Work with the CASS Human Resources Director or designee to acquire and maintain a suitable staff to meet program needs.

        Provide necessary technical training, either directly or through available resources.

2. Manage New Program Activities - 10%

        Delegate or review and correct as necessary, field notes, reports, and any other inspection documents prepared by subordinate staff.

        Ensure accurate documents are forwarded in a timely manner for processing.

3.Training - 5%

        Participate in job-related training to enhance skills.

4. Miscellaneous Program Support - 5%

        Attend Shipping Point and CASS management meetings.

        Attend industry meetings, as directed, to represent the Shipping Point and CASS programs.

Skills/Requirements

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Duties for the job are performed inside or outside of buildings. Weather, temperature, lighting and noise levels may constantly vary. Terrain may vary from smooth to stable to irregular and unstable. The incumbent may regularly work with or around machinery or motorized equipment, work in a noisy environment and be exposed to dust, pollen, moisture and temperature extremes. Driving a vehicle, as well as entering and exiting the vehicle numerous times throughout the workday, is generally required.

INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS
Preferred education for this position is a Bachelor's Degree in Food Safety, Biology, Agriculture or Chemistry (experience performing Food Safety Audits/Inspections may substitute on a year for year basis). Preferred experience includes 4 years of progressive responsibility in Food Safety Auditing. The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective workng relationships with industry; work well under pressure; work collaboratively with other staff members in completing designated work while meeting required deadlines and have normal color vision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The incumbent in this position will be required, with or without reasonable accomodation, to stand and walk constantly, lift up to 20 pounds on a very frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; use repetitive arm and wrist motions; bend, stoop, twist, reach; and, maintain visual acuity along with possessing normal color vision.
